English is an integral part of life which we seek to develop and extend in every possible way. In line with the National Curriculum special emphasis is given to each of the following areas.
Spoken language and listening skills, reading, writing, handwriting, spelling and vocabulary, grammar and punctuation.
At Petts Hill we use Jolly Phonics from Nursery upwards to support children’s phonic knowledge. We use the Oxford Reading Tree as our main reading scheme and additionally use PM books to further support reading development.
From Year 1 to Year 6 in English we base our curriculum on the Wordsmith programme which includes access to a range of e books for both school and home learning opportunities. We hold termly Everyone Writes projects as a stimulus and focus on high quality writing across the school. We take the opportunity to further develop spoken language with class assembly presentations to parents and the school as well as weekly achievement assemblies where children talk about their learning achievements.
