Art Curriculum

Years 1 and 2

Cycle 1 (September 2014)

Autumn

We are learning about textiles and in particular:

  • To explore line, shape, colour and texture in natural forms;
  • To make observations of natural objects and use their observations as the basis for textile design;
  • To use their experience of fabrics to make a collage and learn and use simple techniques for appliqué;

Spring

We are learning about pattern and in particular:

  • To explore shape and pattern in buildings;
  • To produce prints and rubbings of patterns found in buildings
  • To look at, and record, the use of shape, space and pattern in local buildings.
  • To question how these features tell us something about the purpose of the building.
  • To produce a relief sculpture for temporary display, using their first-hand observations as a starting point.

Summer

We are learning about landscapes and in particular:

  • To explore a variety of landscapes through photos, paintings and first hand experiences.
  • To look at, and record, the use of shape, space and colour in landscapes.
  • To study a range of artists describing the differences and similarities between different styles;
  • To make links from these artists to their own work.

Years 1 and 2

Cycle 2 (September 2015)

Autumn

We are learning about sculptures and collage and in particular:

  • To develop understanding of shape, form, texture and the sensory qualities of materials;
  • To learn about the work of sculptors and about different kinds of sculpture, including those made of natural materials;
  • To make a sculpture;
  • To evaluate the effectiveness of the sculptures;
  • To develop technical knowledge about sculpting;
  • To learn skills for arranging materials they have collected to make a relief collage and a sculpture;
  • To make sculptures of animals from these environments.

Spring

We are learning about how London is represented in art and in particular:

  • To use photographs to explore images
  • To use photographs to make our own artwork
  • To take our own photos of London
  • To make collages of buildings and the London skyline
  • To make material collages of plants and patterns in nature
  • To make clay sculptures of London landmarks.

Summer

We are learning about printing and portraits and in particular:

  • To make printing patterns linked to the topic by looking at William Caxton's ideas;
  • To understand how printing makes copies possible;
  • To use computing to make repeated printing patterns;
  • To investigate ways to make prints;
  • To recognise portraits of the people studied and use these portraits to make their own;
  • To make a self-portrait to communicate ideas about themselves;
  • To talk about images of children in drawings, paintings and photographs and artists' self-portraits in order to develop ideas about how they will portray themselves.
  • To investigate a range of drawing materials and techniques and learn how to mix and use colour in a painting.

Years 3 and 4

Cycle 1 (September 2016)

Autumn

We are learning about patterns in Anglo-Saxon jewellery and Roman mosaics and in particular::

  • To produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences about Anglo-Saxon and Roman art.
  • To become proficient in drawing and other techniques for example: painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques – making Anglo-Saxon broaches and jewellery, Roman mosaics and pottery.
  • To evaluate and analyse creative works made by Anglo-Saxon and Roman artists and craft makers using the language of art, craft and design.
  • To know about craft makers and designers from the past.
  • We are learning about art in the Tudor times and making portraits and in particular
  • To produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences about Tudor times.
  • To become proficient in drawing portraits and use other techniques for example: painting, craft and design techniques
  • To evaluate and analyse creative works by other artists using the language of art, craft and design, focusing on Hans Holbein.
  • To know about great artists, craft makers and designers.;

Spring

We are learning about collage in art and in particular:

  • To produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences in sketch books and through collage
  • To become proficient in drawing their ideas and other techniques for example: painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques about the study of Northolt.
  • To evaluate and analyse creative works, on a local history theme by other artists using the language of art, craft and design, focusing on the race course and local features
  • To know about great artists, craft makers and designers, especially Natasha Kerr, a unique kind of biographical textile artist.

Summer

We are learning about nature sculptures and in particular:

  • To produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences in sketch books and through collage and sculpture
  • To become proficient in drawing their ideas and other techniques for example: painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques using nature as a stimulus
  • To evaluate and analyse creative works, by Andy Goldsworthy using the language of art, craft and design.
  • To know about great artists, craft makers and designers, especially Andy Goldsworthy who creates pictures and sculptures using nature

Years 3 and 4

Cycle 2 (September 2017)

Autumn

We are learning about art in the Tudor times and making portraits and in particular:

  • To produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences about Tudor times.
  • To become proficient in drawing portraits and use other techniques for example: painting, craft and design techniques
  • To evaluate and analyse creative works by other artists using the language of art, craft and design, focusing on Hans Holbein.
  • To know about great artists, craft makers and designers..

We are learning about animals in art and in particular:

  • To produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences about animals.
  • To become proficient in drawing animals and other techniques for example: painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques about the study of animals.
  • To evaluate and analyse creative works, on an animal theme by other artists using the language of art, craft and design, focusing on Gormley.
  • To know about great artists, craft makers and designers, especially Henri Rousseau, and how they portray animals in their work..

Years 5 and 6

Cycle 1 (September 2016)

Autumn

We are learning about Ancient artwork and in particular:

  • To produce creative work, exploring Ancient Civilisation art work.
  • To become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques
  • To evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design
  • To know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.

Spring

We are learning about art in the 1960s and in particular:

  • To know about the work of Andy Warhol, his inspirations and thoughts on art.
  • To recreate images in a similar style to Andy Warhol by looking at his use of colour, textures and repetition.
  • To improve mastery of art and design techniques, including drawing, painting and mixing colours.
  • To study other pop art and recreate images in a similar style.
  • To know about 1960s fashion and design.
  • To design an item of clothing or furniture in a similar style.
  • To know how to tie-dye material.

Summer
We are learning about South American art and in particular:

  • To develop their techniques, including their control and their use of materials, with creativity, experimentation and an increasing awareness of different kinds of art, craft and design.
  • To create sketch books to record their observations and use them to review and revisit ideas.
  • To improve their mastery of art and design techniques, including drawing, painting and sculpture with a range of materials [for example, pencil, charcoal, paint, clay] about great artists, architects and designers in history.

Years 5 and 6

Cycle 2 (September 2017)

Autumn

We are learning about dinosaurs in art and in particular:

  • To produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences of fossils.
  • To become proficient in drawing dinosaurs and other techniques for example: painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques about the study of dinosaurs and fossils.

Spring

We are learning about water in art:

  • To develop techniques, including control and use of materials, with creativity, experimentation and an increasing awareness of different kinds of art, craft and design..

Summer

We are learning about Caribbean art and in particular:

  • We are learning to develop techniques, including control and use of materials, with creativity, experimentation and an increasing awareness of different kinds of art, craft and design.
  • To create sketch books to record their observations and use them to review and revisit ideas to improve their mastery of art and design techniques, including, painting and sculpture with a range of materials charcoal, paint, clay)
  • To know about great artists, architects and designers in The Caribbean.
